2011 National Volunteer Awards Campaign

2011 marks the 10th anniversary of the United Nations International Year of Volunteers (IYV+10). To mark this special year and to recognise those volunteers who make an outstanding contribution to their local community, each Member of Parliament (MP) is invited to participate in a nation-wide local awards campaign in their electorate.

The campaign involves the presentation of ten special awards by MPs to local volunteers in their electorate who have made an extraordinary contribution to the community. Each MP is encouraged to organise and promote a ceremony to thank local volunteers for their outstanding contribution and to recognise innovative and inspiring approaches to volunteering. The award ceremonies are to be held on or around International Volunteer Day on 5 December 2011.

What are the award categories?

Ten categories are suggested for the awards. Winners should be chosen by a local judging panel that is led and /or coordinated by the MP. Categories are:

  1. MP’s Volunteer of the Year
  2. Junior Volunteer Award (17 and under)
  3. Young Volunteer Award (18-25)
  4. Education Award
  5. Environment Award
  6. Long-term Commitment to Community Service Award
  7. Business Volunteer Award
  8. Innovation in Volunteering Award (for an organisation or individual)
  9. New Organisation Award
  10. Emergency Management Volunteer Award

Please note that for areas that have been hit by disasters, more than one award in the Emergency Management category may be offered, but a maximum of ten award packs are available for each electorate. Guidelines on the judging nomination process have been developed to ensure national consistency.
